How much can you compress a JPG, PNG or WebP?

Savings depend on the format and what's in the picture. Photos shrink the most; flat graphics and screenshots less so.

JPG photos

Camera and phone JPGs usually drop 60–80% at quality 70–80 with no difference you can see at normal viewing size.

PNG graphics

PNG is lossless. Re-encoding trims metadata and inefficient encoding, but converting to WebP saves far more while keeping transparency.

WebP for the web

WebP is supported by every current browser and is typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG.

Choosing the right quality setting

Quality is a trade-off, not a grade. Use the before/after slider at 100% zoom to find the lowest value that still looks right.

80–90 for print and portfolios

Keeps fine texture like hair, fabric and foliage. Expect around half the original size.

65–80 for web and social

The sweet spot for most photos. Artifacts only show when you zoom far past 100%.

Below 50 for thumbnails

Blocky edges start to show, which is fine for previews and chat stickers.

File size limits on popular platforms

Compress to the limit before you upload, so the platform doesn't recompress it for you.

Email attachments

Most providers cap messages at 20–25 MB in total. Several photos at 300–500 KB each fit comfortably.

Online forms

Visa, job and exam portals often want under 100 KB or 200 KB. Lower the quality and the longest side together.

Website images

Aim for under 200 KB for hero images and under 100 KB for content images to keep pages fast.

Is it safe to compress images here?

Yes. Compression happens in your browser tab using the canvas API. The image is never uploaded, so nothing is stored on our servers.

Will compressing reduce image quality?

JPG and WebP compression removes detail your eye rarely notices. At quality 70–80 most photos look identical at normal size. PNG stays lossless.

Why did my PNG barely get smaller?

PNG is already lossless, so there is little to remove. Choose WebP as the output format to keep transparency and cut the size by half or more.

Does compression keep transparency?

PNG and WebP keep transparent areas. JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white.

What's the largest file I can compress?

Up to 50 MB per image. Very large photos compress faster if you also set a longest side, such as 2560 px.
