Aspect ratios and where to use them

The ratio decides the shape of the frame; the pixel size comes from how much of the photo you keep. Choose the ratio for where the picture is going.

Ratios are exact; the example pixel sizes are the platform recommendations checked September 2026. The US passport uses 2 × 2 in instead of 35×45 mm.

Ratio versus resolution

A 1:1 crop of a 4000 px wide photo can still be 3000 × 3000 px. Cropping never adds pixels, it only removes the parts outside the box.

3:2 for prints

Most cameras shoot 3:2, which matches 4×6 in and 10×15 cm prints. Cropping to it first avoids surprise trimming at the photo lab.

9:16 for vertical video covers

Keep text and faces away from the top and bottom edges, where apps overlay usernames, buttons and captions.

Cropping a passport photo to 35×45 mm

The passport ratio frames your photo at 35 by 45 mm and exports it at 413 × 531 px, the size of that frame printed at 300 dpi.

Frame the head, not just the face

Official rules measure from the chin to the top of the head, usually around 70–80% of the photo height. Leave space above the hair.

Cropping doesn't fix the background

This tool only changes the frame. The background, lighting and expression must already meet the rules of the country you're applying to.

Crop precisely on desktop and mobile

The crop box works with a mouse, a finger or the keyboard, and shows the exact pixel size you'll get while you drag.

Touch-friendly handles

Drag inside the box to move it and pull the corner or edge handles to resize. The handles are big enough to grab with a thumb.

Keyboard nudging

Arrow keys move the box by one pixel, Shift plus an arrow by ten. Handy for lining up an edge exactly.

Output format

Keep the original format or export as JPG, PNG or WebP. EXIF data such as GPS location is removed from the cropped file.

Crop Image: questions

How do I crop an image to a square?

Pick the 1:1 ratio, then drag the box over the part you want to keep. The box stays square while you resize it from any corner, and the readout shows the final size in pixels.

Does cropping an image reduce its quality?

The pixels you keep are not resampled, so they look exactly as before; only the passport ratio is scaled to 413 × 531 px. If you export to JPG or WebP, normal compression applies, while PNG stays lossless.

Can I crop an image on my phone?

Yes. The page works in mobile Safari and Chrome, and the crop handles are sized for fingers. Open the photo from your gallery, crop it and save the result.

Will the 35×45 mm crop be accepted for my passport?

It gives you the right frame and a 300 dpi file, but acceptance also depends on head size, background, lighting and expression. No online tool can guarantee approval, so check your country's official rules.

Can I crop several images at once?

The crop tool handles one image at a time, because each photo needs its own framing. To trim a whole batch to the same size, use a preset with Crop to fill in the resize tool.

Why is my cropped image smaller than the preset size?

Cropping keeps the original resolution of the area you select, so a small selection gives a small image. Resize it afterwards to reach an exact size such as 1080 × 1350.
