Everyday rotation fixes

Most rotations fall into a few familiar situations. Pick the one that matches your picture and you'll know which control to reach for.

Phone photo shows up sideways

The camera saved an orientation tag that another app ignored. Use 90° left or right once and the pixels themselves are turned, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Scanned page is upside down

Documents fed into a scanner the wrong way round need a single 180° turn before you attach them or run text recognition.

Horizon or shelf is slightly tilted

Landscapes, product shots on a table and photos of whiteboards often lean by one or two degrees. The angle slider fixes that in 0.5° steps.

Straightening by a custom angle: expand or crop

Turning by anything other than 90° pushes the corners outside the original frame. You decide what happens to the space that opens up.

Expand the canvas (default)

The output grows just enough to hold the whole rotated picture, so nothing is cut. The empty triangles in the corners get your chosen fill.

Crop to the original size

The output keeps the source dimensions, which suits slideshows and fixed layouts. The rotated corners are trimmed off at the edges.

Transparent, white or black fill

Transparent corners need PNG or WebP output. For JPG, choose white for documents or black for photos shown on dark pages.

Export settings for where the rotated image goes

The output format matters as much as the angle. Match it to the destination so the file looks right and isn't heavier than needed.

JPG turns are re-encoded

Even a 90° rotation redraws and saves the JPEG again rather than shuffling its blocks losslessly. At the default quality the difference is hard to see, but avoid rotating the same JPG over and over.

Orientation is baked in

The browser applies the camera's orientation tag when it opens the photo, and the saved file has that orientation built into its pixels with the EXIF data removed.

Keep the original format

Choose Original to save in the format you uploaded, useful when a website or app expects exactly that file type.

How do I rotate an image that appears sideways?

Upload it and press 90° left or 90° right until it stands upright in the preview. The new file has the pixels turned, so it no longer depends on a hidden orientation tag.

Can I rotate an image by just 1 or 2 degrees?

Yes. The angle slider goes from -180° to 180° in 0.5° steps, which is fine enough to level a horizon or a leaning building.

Why are there white or empty corners after rotating?

A tilted rectangle no longer fills a straight frame. Switch to crop to original size to trim the corners away, or pick a fill colour that suits where the image will be shown.

Is rotating a JPG lossless here?

No. The rotated image is encoded again as a new JPEG, even for 90° turns. Quality stays high for a single rotation, but repeated rounds of rotating and saving slowly add artefacts.

Does rotating an image keep its camera information?

No. The exported file has the orientation applied to its pixels and carries no EXIF data, so camera model, date and GPS location are not included.

Can I rotate a PNG and keep the transparent background?

Yes. Keep PNG or choose WebP as the output and select the transparent fill. Both the original transparency and the new corners stay see-through.
