What to blur in a photo before you share it

Most privacy slips are small details at the edge of the frame. These are the ones worth checking every time.

  • Faces of bystanders

    Strangers in a street photo, other kids at a school event.

  • Number plates

    Before posting a car for sale or a dashcam clip still.

  • Screens and notifications

    Names, messages and emails visible in a screenshot.

  • Documents and IDs

    Account numbers, signatures, dates of birth on a scan.

  • Busy backgrounds

    Blur everything but the subject for a portrait-mode look.

  • House numbers and street names

    Details that reveal where you live in a garden or doorstep photo.

People who didn't agree to be posted

In the EU a recognisable face is personal data. Blurring passers-by and other people's children is the simplest way to share an event photo without asking everyone.

Anything that locates you

House numbers, street signs, school logos and the view from a window can pin down an address. Look at the background, not just the subject.

Text in screenshots

Chat bubbles, email headers, order numbers and QR codes carry more than they seem. Cover the whole line, including avatars.

Blur vs pixelate: which hides details better?

Both effects are computed on the full-resolution image. They look different and they resist different things.

Soft blur

A wide Gaussian-style blur looks natural and is ideal for backgrounds. At low strength large shapes can still be guessed, so use 60+ on faces.

Pixel mosaic

Pixelate replaces each block with its average colour. Big blocks make it obvious that something was hidden — often exactly the point for plates and names.

Background blur

Switch 'Apply to' to 'Everything else', then brush over the subject. The subject stays sharp and the rest softens like a wide-aperture lens.

Redacting safely: what blurring can and can't do

Blurring is right for casual privacy. For legal or financial documents, understand the limits first.

Small text can sometimes be recovered

Light blur or tiny pixel blocks over short text (a PIN, a plate) can be reversed by guessing. For sensitive numbers use maximum strength, or cover them with a solid box.

The export has no hidden layers

The download is a flat image re-drawn from pixels: the original pixels under a blurred area are gone, and EXIF data such as GPS is stripped.

Check the result at full size

Zoom the preview to 200% before downloading. A region that looks hidden on a phone screen may still be readable on a large monitor.

How do I blur a face in a photo for free?

Upload the photo, keep 'Box' selected and drag a rectangle over the face. Raise Strength to 60 or more, check the preview, then download.

Can I blur the background instead of the subject?

Yes. Set 'Apply to' to 'Everything else' and brush over the person or product. Everything outside the painted area is blurred.

Is pixelating safer than blurring?

Large pixel blocks remove more information than a light blur, but neither is a guarantee for short text. For passwords, card numbers or IDs, use maximum strength and verify the result zoomed in.

Does the blur image tool upload my photo?

No. The photo is decoded and processed by your browser; nothing is sent to our servers. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Can I blur several areas at once?

Draw as many boxes and brush strokes as you like; they all use the same effect and strength. Undo removes the last one.

Does blurring a screenshot remove the text underneath?

The exported file contains only the blurred pixels — there are no layers to peel back. The original screenshot on your device is untouched, so delete it if it shouldn't be kept.
