When a mirrored image is the one you need

Flipping looks like a small change, but it solves a surprising number of real problems. These are the ones people bring to a flip tool most often.

Selfie or webcam text reads backwards

Front cameras often save a mirrored picture, so a T-shirt slogan or a sign behind you comes out reversed. A horizontal flip makes it readable again.

Iron-on and transfer prints

Designs printed on transfer paper are pressed face down, so they must be mirrored before printing or the text ends up backwards on the fabric.

Balancing a layout

If a person or product faces off the edge of a banner, mirroring it turns their gaze back towards your headline without a reshoot.

A mirror is not a rotation

Rotating keeps text readable at an angle; flipping reverses it. If writing looks backwards, you need a flip, not a turn.

Vertical flips for reflections

Place a vertically flipped copy under the original in any editor to build a lake or glass-floor reflection.

Both axes equals half a turn

Flipping horizontally and vertically together gives exactly the same pixels as rotating by 180°.

Before you mirror: things to check

A flipped image is only right if nothing in it gives the trick away. A quick look at a few details saves an awkward result.

Logos and writing

Any brand name, number plate or sign in the background will read backwards after a horizontal flip. Crop it out or leave the photo unflipped.

Faces are not symmetric

People are used to seeing their mirror image, so a flipped portrait can look more familiar to them and slightly odd to everyone else.

Choose the output format

Keep the original format, or pick JPG, PNG or WebP. Transparent PNG artwork stays transparent when saved as PNG or WebP.

How do I flip an image horizontally?

How do I fix a selfie where the text is backwards?

The front camera saved a mirrored shot. A single horizontal flip puts the writing back the right way round.

Should I mirror a design before printing an iron-on transfer?

For most transfer papers for light fabrics, yes, because the print is pressed face down. Check the instructions on your paper, since some dark-fabric papers are not mirrored.

Is flipping vertically the same as rotating by 180°?

No. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom but keeps left and right, so text becomes an upside-down mirror image. Choosing Both matches a 180° rotation.

Does flipping an image remove its metadata?

Yes. The exported file is a fresh image with no EXIF data, so camera details and any GPS location are not carried over.

Can I flip an image with a transparent background?

Yes. Save the result as PNG or WebP and transparency is kept. Choosing JPG fills the transparent areas, since that format has no alpha channel.
