Aim for under eight words per line. Readers take in a meme in about a second, and big text reads faster than long text.

Let the picture do half the work

The best captions add a twist to the expression in the photo rather than describing it. If the text works without the picture, it's a tweet.

Test it small

Zoom the preview out to phone size. If you can't read the bottom line at thumbnail size, raise the text size or shorten it.

Square or 4:5 for feeds

Instagram and Facebook feeds show 1:1 and 4:5 best. Crop before making the meme if your photo is very wide.

Group chats

Messaging apps downscale large images. JPG at the default quality is the safest choice for sharing quickly.

Keep a PNG for reposting

Each repost recompresses the image. Starting from a PNG avoids the 'deep-fried' look after a few rounds.

Is this meme generator free and without a watermark?

Yes. There is no watermark and no paid tier for memes. A free account is only needed to download.

Can I use famous meme templates?

We don't host a template library, because most classic meme images are copyrighted. Upload a picture you took or have the right to use.

Why doesn't my meme text look like Impact?

Impact is a system font. It's installed on Windows and macOS; on Linux and some Android phones a similar bold font is used instead. The outline still keeps it readable.

How do I make the meme text smaller or bigger?

Classic text fits itself to the width automatically; the Text size slider sets its maximum. Caption and poster text scale with the same slider.

Can I make a meme on my phone?

Yes. The editor works in mobile browsers: pick a photo from your gallery, type the lines, and drag extra text with your finger.

Does the meme generator upload my pictures?

No. Your picture is turned into a meme inside the browser tab and saved directly to your device.
