AVIF is the newest web image format, and plenty of software still can't open it. Convert AVIF files to JPG in this tab and use them anywhere.

What AVIF is and why you are seeing it

AVIF stores a still frame of the AV1 video codec in a HEIF container. Websites adopt it because it often beats WebP and JPG on file size, especially for photos with smooth gradients.

Compression gains depend strongly on the image and encoder settings.

Saved from websites

Image CDNs and frameworks increasingly send AVIF to browsers that accept it, so "Save image as" hands you an .avif file.

Exported by newer apps

Some cameras, phones and editors can export AVIF. The recipient may not be able to open it.

Converting a young format to the oldest one

AVIF is technically ahead of JPG in almost every way. You convert purely for compatibility, so keep the AVIF original if you can.

Convert for editors and office apps

Older image editors, document tools and many desktop viewers show an error or blank preview for AVIF.

Convert for uploads

Marketplaces, forms and older content systems often whitelist JPG, PNG and maybe WebP, but not AVIF.

Keep AVIF for your website

If you publish images, AVIF with a JPG or WebP fallback is the faster option. Don't replace it site-wide.

What the JPG copy can't carry

The visible picture converts cleanly. Features beyond what JPG supports are flattened.

HDR and 10/12-bit colour

The image is converted to 8-bit standard range. HDR highlights are tone-mapped by the browser's decoder and may look flatter.

Transparency

Transparent areas are filled with white or a colour you choose. Use a PNG output if you need the alpha channel.

Animation and file size

Animated AVIF becomes its first frame. And expect a larger file: JPG needs more bytes for the same look.

AVIF support in browsers and apps

All major browsers now decode AVIF. Beyond browsers, support is still arriving.

Why this page can read AVIF

Your browser's own AVIF decoder does the work, so conversion needs no extra download and nothing is uploaded.

Older browser?

If your browser predates AVIF support, the file won't decode here. Update the browser, then try again.

AVIF to JPG: questions

How do I open an AVIF file on Windows or Mac?

Modern browsers open AVIF directly. To use it in other apps, convert AVIF to JPG here and open the JPG anywhere.

Is AVIF better than JPG?

For file size and features, usually yes: AVIF supports HDR, transparency and more efficient compression. JPG wins on compatibility, which is why converting helps.

Will AVIF to JPG conversion make my images look worse?

At quality 85–90 the difference is minor, but HDR or wide-colour AVIFs are flattened to standard 8-bit JPG, which can look slightly less vivid.

Why is my JPG several times bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF's AV1-based compression is far more efficient than JPEG. Lower the quality slider if you need a smaller JPG.

Can I convert animated AVIF?

Only the first frame is converted to JPG. The animation is not preserved.

Does conversion keep the photo's EXIF data?

No. Metadata is stripped when the JPG is written, including location and capture date.
