HEIC vs JPG: what actually differs
HEIC is the container Apple uses for iPhone photos since iOS 11. It stores the picture with HEVC compression, which is newer and more efficient than the JPEG codec from 1992.

Why iPhones pick HEIC
The "High Efficiency" camera setting saves storage: roughly twice as many photos fit in the same space at similar visual quality.
Why the rest of the world wants JPG
JPG is the format every website, printer kiosk, government portal and Windows PC has accepted for decades.
What a converter does
It decodes the HEVC image and re-encodes the pixels as JPEG at the quality you choose. The file gets bigger, but it opens everywhere.
When to convert iPhone photos to JPG, and when not to
Converting is a compatibility fix. If every device and service you use already reads HEIC, keep the originals.
Convert: uploads that reject HEIC
Visa, job, exam and rental portals often accept only JPG or PNG. A converted JPG passes the file-type check.
Convert: sharing with Windows or Android users
Older Windows installs and many Android gallery apps show a blank thumbnail for HEIC. JPG avoids the "I can't open it" reply.
Don't: archiving your photo library
Keep the HEIC originals in your library. They are smaller and keep depth and HDR data that JPG cannot store.
What you lose going from HEIC to JPG
The visible picture survives well at quality 85 or higher. Some extras stored beside the photo do not.
Depth map and Live Photo motion
Portrait-mode depth data and the short video of a Live Photo are not part of the JPG. Only the still frame is converted.
HDR headroom
Recent iPhones store extra brightness information for HDR displays. The JPG is a standard 8-bit image, so highlights look like a normal photo.
EXIF, GPS and capture date
Metadata is stripped on export. That removes your home location from shared photos, but the capture date and camera details go too.
Where HEIC and JPG open without converting
HEIC support has grown, but it is still uneven outside Apple devices. JPG works everywhere.

Why Chrome can't show HEIC
HEVC is covered by patent licensing, so most browsers ship without an HEIC decoder. This page loads a decoder only when you drop a HEIC file.
Changing the iPhone default
Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible makes the camera shoot JPG. Future photos are larger, but you never need to convert.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows without installing anything?
Drop the HEIC files on this page. They are decoded and saved as JPG inside your browser, so you don't need the Microsoft HEIF extensions or any app.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so there is a second round of compression. At quality 85–92 the difference is not visible at normal viewing size; the file just gets larger than the HEIC.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding and encoding happen on your device. The HEIC decoder is a script loaded into the page, and your photos never leave the browser tab.
Why is the JPG bigger than my HEIC file?
HEVC compresses about twice as efficiently as JPEG. To keep the same look, the JPG needs more bytes. Lower the quality slider if size matters more.
Can I convert a whole camera roll export at once?
You can drop up to 10 HEIC photos per batch on a free account, or 50 with a credit pack, and download them together as a ZIP.
What happens to Live Photos and bursts?
Only the first still image in the HEIC file is converted. Live Photo video and extra burst frames are ignored.
