Why pick PNG over JPG for an iPhone photo
PNG stores pixels losslessly. Converting HEIC to PNG freezes the decoded photo exactly, which matters if you will edit and re-save it several times.

Clean inputs for design tools
Figma, Canva, PowerPoint and Keynote accept PNG everywhere, while HEIC imports are hit or miss.

Should you convert to PNG or to JPG?
Both formats open everywhere. The choice is about file size versus editing headroom.
Pick PNG for work-in-progress
Masking, cut-outs, collages and anything you will open again later. The large file is a temporary working copy.
Pick JPG for sending and uploading
Email, chat and web forms prefer small files. A 12 MP photo as PNG can exceed upload limits.
Transparency still has to be made
iPhone photos have no transparent areas. PNG gives you a format that can hold them once you remove a background.
What stays behind in the HEIC
The picture converts faithfully. What PNG can't take with it:
10-bit and HDR brightness
The decoded image is 8 bits per channel, so HDR highlights are mapped to a standard photo.
Live Photo, depth and burst frames
Only the first still image is converted. Portrait depth maps and motion are dropped.
Location and camera details
EXIF and GPS are removed on export, which is safer for sharing. The capture date is removed as well.
Which apps read HEIC and PNG
PNG is one of the most widely supported image formats. HEIC is mainly at home on Apple devices.

HEIC to PNG: questions
Is HEIC to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG stores the decoded pixels without further compression loss. The only change is that 10-bit or HDR data is mapped to 8 bits per channel.
Why is my PNG ten times bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC is lossy and very efficient; PNG is lossless and has to store every detail of the photo. That size is the price of an edit-safe copy.
Will converting HEIC to PNG give me a transparent background?
No. The photo is converted as-is, with its background. Use a background remover afterwards; PNG will keep the transparency it creates.
Can I convert HEIC screenshots from my iPhone?
Yes. Screenshots saved as HEIC convert well to PNG, which keeps text and interface edges sharp.
Does it work offline once the page is open?
The conversion itself runs locally. The HEIC decoder is fetched the first time you add a HEIC file, so load one while you are online.
Do I need an account?
You can convert and preview freely. Downloading the PNG files requires a free account; the photos still never leave your device.
