What a PNG can and cannot do for a JPG
PNG stores pixels exactly, so it stops quality from getting worse. It cannot bring back detail the JPG already threw away.

No quality comes back
Blockiness and colour banding baked into the JPG are copied pixel for pixel. A PNG made from a JPG is never better than its source.
No automatic transparency
The white or coloured background stays in the picture. To cut out the subject you need a background remover, then save as PNG.
Losslessness from here on
Every save after this point is exact. That matters when a file goes through several rounds of cropping, annotating and exporting.
Good reasons to convert JPG to PNG
The switch makes sense when the file is a working copy or when a tool downstream expects PNG.
Multi-step editing
Annotating a screenshot, adding text or layering graphics over a photo? Work on a PNG so each export does not stack another round of JPG compression.
Design and slide tools
Some templates, sticker makers and asset pipelines only take PNG. Converting keeps the picture identical while matching the requirement.
Screenshots someone sent as JPG
If a diagram or UI capture arrived as JPG, converting it will not clean the artifacts, but any text or arrows you add afterwards stay crisp.
The cost: file size and where it matters
A lossless copy of a photo is heavy. Plan for that before you send or publish it.

Expect a bigger file
Photos with lots of texture can grow several times over. Flat images such as scanned forms grow much less.
Downsize if you can
If the PNG is for a slide or a web graphic, reduce the pixel dimensions first with the resize tool to keep it manageable.
Convert back when finished
Once edits are done, export the final version to JPG or WebP for sharing so it stays light.
JPG to PNG: questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the decoded JPG, artifacts included. It only prevents further loss when you keep editing and saving.
Will my JPG to PNG conversion have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the background stays solid in the PNG. Use a background remover first if you need a cut-out.
Why is the PNG so much larger than my JPG?
PNG stores every pixel without discarding anything, while JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices. Photos with fine texture therefore take much more space as PNG.
Can I convert a batch of JPG files to PNG?

Is the GPS location from my photo kept in the PNG?
No. The file is redrawn in your browser and exported without EXIF, so camera details and location data are not copied.
