PNG vs JPG: what actually changes in the file
Converting PNG to JPG swaps a lossless format for a lossy one. For photos that is usually a good trade; for text and flat graphics it can show.

Photos saved as PNG
A phone photo or render exported as PNG keeps every pixel, which makes it heavy. As a JPG at quality 80–90 it looks the same on screen and takes far less space.
Transparent areas become solid
JPG cannot store transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with white by default, or with any colour you pick so a logo sits on the right background.
Sharp text needs a higher quality
JPG smears hard edges slightly. For screenshots with small text, keep quality at 90 or above, or stay with PNG.
When converting PNG to JPG is worth it
The conversion pays off when the picture is photographic and the destination cares about size or only accepts JPG.
Upload forms that reject PNG
Many application, visa and exam portals list JPG as the only photo format. Converting is quicker than hunting for another photo.
Email and messaging
A folder of PNG photos can blow past attachment limits. The same set as JPG usually fits in a single message.
Keep PNG for logos and interface art
Flat colours, thin lines and transparency are what PNG is built for. Converting those to JPG adds grey halos and loses the transparent background.
Where JPG is accepted and PNG sometimes is not
JPG is the most widely accepted photo format. PNG support is common but not universal, especially on older systems and strict upload forms.

Read the portal rules first
If a form says JPG or JPEG, a .png file is often rejected even when it looks fine. JPEG and JPG are the same format.
Match the size limit too
Portals often cap uploads at 100 KB to 2 MB. Lower the quality slider until the JPG fits.
Printing
Labs print JPGs at the resolution you give them. Converting does not change the pixel dimensions.
PNG to JPG: questions
How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?
Set the quality to 90 or higher. JPG is always lossy, but at that level photos look identical at normal viewing size. Text-heavy screenshots may still show slight softening around letters.
What happens to the transparent background when I convert PNG to JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so those pixels need a colour. The converter uses white by default and lets you pick another colour, for example to match a dark website header.
Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?
That happens with simple graphics: flat colour areas compress extremely well in PNG and poorly in JPG. For logos, icons and diagrams, keeping PNG or converting to WebP is the better choice.
Can I convert several PNG files to JPG at once?

Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser tab, so the files never reach our servers. Metadata such as EXIF is dropped from the output.
Is JPEG different from JPG?
No. They are two spellings of the same format. Older Windows versions limited extensions to three letters, which is where .jpg comes from.
