Why websites swap PNG for WebP

PNG is lossless, which makes it heavy for anything with gradients or photographic detail. WebP handles the same images, transparency included, in far fewer bytes.

Faster Largest Contentful Paint

Hero images and product shots are often the biggest thing on a page. Smaller files help them render sooner, especially on mobile data.

Transparency without the PNG weight

WebP keeps an alpha channel even in lossy mode, so cut-out product photos stay transparent at a fraction of the size.

Supported by every current browser

Since Safari 14 you can serve WebP to essentially all visitors without a PNG fallback for modern browsers.

PNG vs WebP: format properties

The biggest wins come from photographic PNGs. Tiny flat icons gain less.

Savings depend on image content; check the result size before replacing files.

Lossy slider or visually lossless

Quality 80–90 is usually indistinguishable for screenshots and illustrations. Watch sharp text at 100% zoom before going lower.

16-bit PNGs get reduced

WebP is 8-bit, so 16-bit PNGs from scanners or design tools are reduced to 8 bits per channel.

When to keep the PNG

WebP is a delivery format. Some jobs still belong to PNG.

Master files and editing

Keep the lossless PNG as your source. Export WebP for the site, and re-export when the design changes.

Email and documents

Many email clients and older office apps handle PNG more reliably than WebP.

Pixel-perfect assets

Pixel art, QR codes and tiny UI sprites can blur under lossy WebP. Use a high quality setting or keep PNG.

Where WebP is supported

For web delivery, support is essentially universal today. Outside the browser, check the target app.

Encoded in your browser

Your browser's WebP encoder is used where available; otherwise a WebP encoder loads on demand. Files are never uploaded.

Serving it on your site

Use the WebP in a plain img tag for modern browsers, or a picture element with the PNG as fallback if you still support very old devices.

PNG to WebP: questions

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel in both lossy and lossless mode, so transparent backgrounds are preserved.

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

It depends on the image. Photographic and gradient-heavy PNGs usually shrink the most; simple flat icons may barely change. The result panel shows the exact size.

Should I convert PNG to WebP for my website?

For images you serve on web pages, generally yes: smaller files load faster and every current browser displays WebP. Keep the PNGs as your editable masters.

Will text in screenshots stay sharp?

At quality 85–90 text usually stays crisp. If you see fringes around letters, raise the quality slider.

Can I bulk convert PNG to WebP?

Yes, up to 10 files per batch on a free account or 50 with a credit pack, downloaded as a single ZIP.

Is PNG to WebP conversion private?

Yes. Encoding runs in your browser tab, so your images stay on your device.
