JPG vs WebP for the web
WebP was designed as a web replacement for JPG. At similar visual quality, a WebP is usually smaller, and it can also hold transparency and animation.

Smaller pages, faster loads
Images are usually the heaviest part of a page. Serving WebP instead of JPG trims bytes without redesigning anything.
Pick quality with your eyes
A WebP quality of 75–85 is a common starting point for photos. Compare the preview at 100% zoom before settling.
Very large images
WebP stops at 16,383 pixels per side. Panoramas and huge scans beyond that must be resized first or kept as JPG.
Where WebP opens and where it still struggles
Every current browser displays WebP. Desktop apps, email and older devices are less consistent, so think about who receives the file.

The ideal target. Most site builders and CMSs accept WebP uploads today.
Sending to people
For email attachments or files a relative will print, JPG remains the safer choice.
Keep the original JPG
Store the JPG as your master copy and publish the WebP. If a platform refuses WebP you still have the original.
What you lose going from JPG to WebP
Both formats are lossy, so the conversion re-encodes an already compressed picture. Done carefully, the loss is invisible.
A second round of compression
Artifacts from the JPG are encoded again. Starting from the best-quality JPG you have gives the cleanest WebP.
Camera metadata
EXIF data such as camera model, date and GPS is not copied. That is usually welcome on a public site.
Universal compatibility
A JPG opens almost anywhere. A WebP is safe on the web but not in every inbox, printer or government form.
JPG to WebP: questions
Is converting JPG to WebP worth it for my website?
Usually yes. WebP files are typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at similar quality, which speeds up pages and saves bandwidth on mobile.
Does JPG to WebP conversion reduce quality?
Slightly, because it is a second lossy encode. At quality 80 or above the difference is hard to see; lower settings trade visible detail for smaller files.
Can every browser show a WebP image?
All current major browsers do, including Safari since iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur. Very old browsers and some email clients may not.
What is the best WebP quality setting for photos?
Start around 80 and compare the preview. Drop toward 70 for thumbnails, raise it toward 90 for hero images where detail matters.
Can I convert many JPG files to WebP in one go?

Why is my WebP larger than the JPG?
It can happen when the JPG was already heavily compressed and you pick a high WebP quality. Lower the quality slider until the WebP is smaller.
