Instagram grid layouts and when to use them

Profiles show three posts per row, so every grid here is three columns wide. The number of rows decides how much of your profile the image takes over.

  • 3 × 1 panorama

    One row across the top of the profile — landscapes and banners.

  • 3 × 2 banner

    Two rows for a launch or event announcement.

  • 3 × 3 grid

    The classic nine-post takeover of the whole visible profile.

  • 3 × 4 portrait

    Twelve tall tiles for a portrait photo or a poster.

3 × 1 is the low-commitment option

Three posts form one wide strip. It stays intact as you keep posting, sliding down the profile as one unit.

3 × 3 fills the first screen

Nine tiles cover roughly what a phone shows when someone opens your profile — ideal for a rebrand or a launch.

Pick a photo with a clear centre

Each tile is also seen alone in the feed. Photos where every tile has something to look at work far better than a single subject in the middle.

Tile sizes and the source resolution you need

Instagram's profile grid currently previews posts as 3:4 portraits. Tiles cut at 3:4 line up seamlessly there; square and 4:5 tiles get trimmed in the grid view.

3:4 for a seamless profile

1080 × 1440 tiles fill the grid preview exactly, so the picture continues across tiles without gaps.

1:1 and 4:5 for the feed

Square and 4:5 tiles look best when each post is viewed on its own, at the cost of small seams on the profile grid.

Source resolution

For sharp 1080 px tiles the photo needs to be at least 3240 px wide. Smaller photos still work but are upscaled — the tool warns you.

Posting grid tiles in the right order

Instagram puts the newest post at the top left, so the bottom-right tile has to go up first.

Follow the numbers

Files are named post-01, post-02 … in upload order, and the preview shows the same numbers on each tile.

Post them in one sitting

If you post something else in between, every tile after it shifts by one and the picture breaks. Queue them all before you start.

Use a carousel as a backup

The ZIP also works as one carousel post: upload tiles in reverse order (09 to 01) to show the picture piece by piece.

How do I make a 3×3 grid for Instagram?

Upload a photo, choose 3×3, move the crop if needed and download. Post the nine files from post-01 to post-09 without posting anything in between.

Why do my grid tiles not line up on my profile?

The profile grid previews posts at 3:4, so square or 4:5 tiles are trimmed at the edges. Choose the 3:4 grid shape for a seamless result.

Which order should I post the grid pictures in?

Start with the bottom-right tile and end with the top-left one. The file names and the numbers on the preview already follow that order.

What photo size is best for an Instagram grid?

At least 3240 px wide for 1080 px tiles; for a 3×3 grid at 3:4, about 3240 × 4320 px. Photos from recent phones are usually big enough.

Can I choose which part of the photo is used?

Yes. When the photo is wider or taller than the grid, the crop position sliders move the grid over it; the dimmed area is what will be cut off.

Does the grid maker post to Instagram for me?

No — it never connects to your account. It only prepares the tiles on your device; you post them from the Instagram app.
